Beaver Boardwalk

Hinton's Beaver Boardwalk is a local treasure. An interpretative location where Hintonites and visitors from around the world can walk into the wetlands and discover the full breadth of our natural surroundings, without trekking into deep bush.

The world's longest freshwater boardwalk is a great family outing that showcases the local wetland system around Maxwell Lake.

Numbers of beavers vary from year to year, but at times there are upwards of a dozen in the area. The boardwalk meanders through marshland and fens, bringing visitors close to the active beaver dam and lodge.

Visiting in the warm weather months, early morning or evening is the best time to see the beavers hard at work. Numerous species of birds, butterflies, as well as deer frequent the boardwalk area and surrounding trail systems.

As a volunteer-run group, the Hinton Mountain Biking Association (HMBA) is committed to providing and maintaining free access multi-purpose mountain bike trails and facilities, for use by the public. As well, the group promotes local mountain bike events and activities for community participation in healthy recreation.

Hinton is becoming well-known as a Mountain Bike Mecca, with an outstanding mountain bike skills park that is fun, accessible, safe, and free of charge, as well as boasting over 50 km of cross-country trails that can be accessed from the skills park.

In particular, the Happy Creek Trail System presents a series of connecting single-track trails with a wide range of options for all skill levels. Rolling terrain and an interesting mix of roots, sidehills, climbs, stunts, boardwalks and viewpoints make this a local favorite.

New in 2019 is the Bighorn Trail project led by industry partner West Fraser on a 10 kilometre uphill trail built to the top of the Bighorn Ridge, with riders returning via a 5 kilometre downhill trail or continuing on an existing 10 kilometre ridge trail. Incredible terrain and breathtaking views will reward Bighorn Trail riders!
